âYour height ainât changed, Someya, youâre still as short as you ever were!â Hashimoto said.
âThatâs the truth,â said Hidaka.
âMmhmm,â mumbled Someya, uncertain what to say next. Then he grinned, his front teeth missing. A toothless grin. His teeth were grinning from his hand. A mouthless grin.
âWhat about the romance that started in the pig shed?â he said.
The other three shot glances at him as though heâd overstepped his bounds. Someya took no notice.
âTakeo took Midoriâs place,â he laughed.
Hatsue liked her brotherâs classmate Kawano Itaru. She liked him far more than she did Abe Hachiro. Hachi was thin and swarthy. He had sharp features and deep-set eyes, as though a sculptor had gouged too deeply with his chisel. She never dreamed she would end up marrying him.
But her feelings for Itaru died away. It wasnât because she learned that they were related (Itaruâs father was Hatsueâs great uncle); Hatsue knew that a connection like that was no barrier to marriage. One of her brotherâs friends, Someya, had parents who were cousins, but he was still a much faster runner than her brother. So, being related like that didnât matter. That didnât stop her from liking Itaru.
It was Itaruâs father who messed things up, when he made the mistake with the name sheâd chosen for the boat. It was unbelievable! She was furious. And to think that it was Itaruâs father who had built the boat with his own hands! Didnât he care about the things he made? Her anger didnât fade. It was the first time her father had given her, rather than her brother, the right to name a boat. And it was no ordinary boat. It was the reincarnation of Midori. Midori, who had been sacrificed to celebrate the boatâs completion. And what made it even more terrible was that Hatsue had, without knowing it, eaten her, a part of her. Hatsue hated herself for that. She thought of Midoriâs eyesâclever, moist, green eyesâthe reason she had chosen to name her Midori. Hatsueâs own eyes grew moist as she remembered her. Midori had been naughty. Hatsue knew. She knew what her brother did, hiding in the barn. She knew why he was nasty to Midori.
Her brotherâs trousers were down. He was playing with his willy. Midori (her name was Momo then) grew excited. Mucus ran from her muddy, straw-covered snout. Saliva and bits of food spilled from her mouth. She shrieked. Her voice sounded just like a humanâs. She jumped up against the side of the pen, toward the regular movement of Yoshiâs hand. Her body was shaking. She shrieked again. Then for some reason their mother came rushing in. She looked at Yoshi, shocked. Later, she told their father, who just laughed, long and hard. But Yoshi didnât find it funny. He blushed crimson as he watched his father laugh.
Yoshi was very annoyed about what had happened. Thatâs why he put a firecracker in Momoâs anus. He had no right to do a thing like that. He had no right over her at all.
